Sofreh Aghd: Guide to Wedding Table Traditions

Froyle Park Welcomes and Supports Sofreh Aghd Traditions

Couples that host their Persian / Iranian wedding at Froyle Park often tell us that the setting feels like it was made for the Sofreh Aghd. With its blend of timeless English charm and neutral, elegant interiors, our historic venue is perfect for cultural and spiritual traditions of all cultures and beliefs.

The perfect Sofreh Aghd ceremony

Here’s how we ensure your Sofreh Aghd is celebrated in style (and with grace):

1. Flexible ceremony spaces

Whether you set the Sofreh Aghd beneath the dramatic chandelier of our Grand Ballroom or decide to set it against the soft natural light of the Drawing Room, your Sofreh Aghd has all the room to shine on your wedding day.

Alternatively, outdoor ceremonies can take place overlooking the Hampshire countryside, offering yet another beautiful option, especially for couples who want a serene, open-air moment, best in the summer months.

2. Ample set-up time for stylists

We understand that crafting a Sofreh Aghd is a meticulous art. Your chosen stylist or family designers are welcome to arrive in advance, ensuring every detail starting with the placement of rosebuds to the polish of the mirror, is just right.

3. Support for bespoke cultural elements

From seating arrangements to ceremony flow, our team is familiar with the rhythms of Iranian and Persian wedding traditions such as Sofreh Aghd. We are on hand day and night to ensure the experience is seamless, comfortable and entirely personal when it comes to your wedding celebrations.

4. Space for family involvement

A Sofreh Aghd ceremony is often deeply collaborative. Froyle Park’s spacious layout accommodates larger family groups, enabling everyone including parents, grandparents, elders, and friends, to be close to the happy couple during the ritual.

What Goes on the Sofreh Aghd Table

A Sofreh Aghd is the Persian wedding ceremony spread, and while families customise it, there’s a core set of traditional items people usually include.

Here’s a checklist of items you can choose from for your Sofreh Aghd table. It includes all of the symbolic items you can use at a Persian wedding:

Center of the table

  • Mirror (Aayeneh) – so the couple first see each other’s reflection; symbol of light and clarity.
  • Two candles or candelabra – usually one on each side of the mirror, for light and energy in the couple’s life.
  • A book – often the Qur’an, but many modern couples use a book of Hafez/Rumi poetry or Shahnameh, symbolising wisdom and blessing.

Sweetness & good fortune

  • Honey – for the “honey ceremony” where the couple dip a finger and feed each other to start married life sweetly.
  • Sugar cones (kaleh ghand) – rubbed together above the couple’s heads to sprinkle sweetness.
  • Rock/crystallised sugar (nabat) – extra symbol of sweetness.
  • Sweets & pastries – to bring joy and sweetness to the marriage.

Abundance & prosperity

  • Bread (naan) – for sustenance and prosperity.
  • Cheese & fresh herbs (and sometimes walnuts) – a traditional Persian combination symbolising a happy, prosperous life.
  • Nuts in their shells – abundance and fertility.
  • Fruits (often pomegranates, apples, grapes) to symbolise life, joy and fertility.
  • Wheat, barley or rice (sometimes in decorated bundles) to symbolise growth, harvest and prosperity.
  • Coins – wealth and financial blessing.

Protection & purity

  • Wild rue (esfand) – often burned as incense or displayed to ward off the evil eye and bad energy.
  • Rose water – for fragrance and spiritual cleansing.

Love, family & beauty

  • Eggs (and sometimes decorated eggs) – fertility and the start of a new family.
  • Flowers – beauty, life and freshness.
  • A tray of seven spices or herbs – in some sofreh designs, each spice has a symbolic meaning (health, love, protection, etc.).

Ceremony-specific items

  • A fine cloth (ghand cloth) – held over the couple’s heads during the sugar-rubbing.
  • Needle and thread – symbolically to “sew” the couple’s lives together (not always included, but common).
  • Decorated bowls/plates and candle holders – chosen to match the colour scheme and style.

Consider:

  • Golden accents and crystal pieces that complement the venue’s elegant Georgian character.’
