What is a Desi Wedding?

A Journey Through Traditions and Celebrations

At Froyle Park, we’ve had the privilege of hosting countless beautiful Asian wedding celebrations, but few can be as vibrant and joyous as a Desi wedding. If you’re planning your own celebration with us, or simply curious about the traditions of a Desi wedding, then here’s all you need to know…

Understanding “Desi” – More Than Just a Wedding Style

The term “Desi” comes from the Sanskrit word for “desha,” which translates as country or homeland. But when applied in more modern usage, Desi refers to the people and cultures from countries including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal.

We can therefore define a Desi wedding as one which includes all of the diverse wedding traditions from these counties and regions, each of which bring their own unique parts to a celebration. Desi weddings are special due to their visual splendour, including vibrant colours, intricate decorations, and stunning attire – but there’s also the deep spiritual significance, the emphasis on family unity, and the celebration of love that spans multiple days and includes entire communities.

The Multi-Day Celebration Experience

Unlike Western weddings that will typically last one day, Desi weddings are held over several days, with each day and event holding special significance. At Froyle Park, we’ve hosted everything from intimate pre-wedding ceremonies to grand reception celebrations, and each event brings its own magic.

Desi Wedding Traditions

While every region, religion, and family has its own unique practices, there are some common traditions you’ll often find in Desi weddings held at Froyle Park.

1. The Mehndi Ceremony

This is a pre-wedding celebration packed full of colour, music, and laughter. The bride’s hands and feet are adorned with intricate henna designs, often symbolising joy, prosperity, and love. The Desi wedding guests join in the festivities with dancing and traditional songs making it a wonderful opportunity for both sides of the family to bond.

2. The Sangeet

The Sangeet is a lively evening filled with choreographed dances, heartfelt performances, and spirited singing. It’s a chance for family and friends to celebrate the upcoming union through music and movement. Imagine Froyle Park’s Ballroom transformed into a stage of dazzling lights and dance, where generations come together in a joyful chorus.

3. The Baraat

This is when the groom arrives and is nothing short of a spectacle. Traditionally, he arrives on horseback (or sometimes even in more contemporary style) accompanied by drummers, dancers, and family members. The Baraat is a celebration in itself, filled with exuberance before the formal ceremony begins.

4. The Wedding Ceremony

Depending on the faith of the couple, and their family heritage, the Desi wedding rituals will differ to include Hindu pheras (circling the sacred fire) to Muslim nikah (the signing of the marriage contract), and Sikh ceremonies often held in a Gurdwara. Each ritual is steeped in symbolism, honouring values of love, respect, and lifelong unity.

5. The Reception

The reception is the grand finale, where all that elegance meets festivity. Here, guests tuck into exquisite food, hear traditional (and modern) music, and will often dance into the early hours. At Froyle Park, receptions unfold beautifully in our stately Ballroom or beneath our sparkling chandeliers.
